1.0  Introduction

     The Seventh-day Adventist Christian School is a private school operated by the two Seventh-day Adventist Churches of Saskatoon.  It is one link in the worldwide chain of over 5,400 Elementary Schools, Junior & Senior Academies, Colleges, and Universities provided by the church for harmonious development of the physical, mental, social, and spiritual powers of its youth.

2.0  Philosophy
     Seventh-day Adventist Christian School is operated in harmony with the beliefs, practices, and educational philosophy of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.  Seventh-day Adventists believe that the Holy Scriptures are the perfect standard of truth and, as such, should be given the highest place in education.
     We are committed to develop and nurture in all our students a love for Christ and humanity by providing a Christ-centered and Bible-based education.  Our learning environment will encourage the students to pursue excellence in moral character, academic achievement, and service to others.

3.0  Accreditation
     The Seventh-day Adventist Christian School is accredited by the Manitoba-Saskatchewan Conference of the Seventh-day Adventists and the Union of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada.  The Independent/Home Based Learning Schools of Education of the Province of Saskatchewan recognizes the school.

4.0  Message to Parents
     The success of the school program depends largely on the full cooperation between the parents, teachers, and the school board.  Experience has proven that where such co-operation exists between the parents and the teachers, problems and differences are readily solvable.  If your child complains and feels that he has been treated unfairly, please reserve judgement until the incident has been investigated.  In this way, unhappy consequences can often be prevented.  Parents are urged to call the principal if they have any questions. 
(see Grievance Policy - section 16.0)

4.1  Parent Tips
     The ideas provided below are to help with your child's education.  We encourage you to read through them and adapt them in your home.
     a.  Maintain a regular schedule for getting up, meals, work, study time, worship, and bedtime.
     b.  Ensure that your child has a good breakfast before coming to school, and has a nourishing lunch to take to school.
     c.  Control the TV, radio, video games, DVD's, and other distracting activities, especially during study times and the school year.
     d.  Keep in touch with your child's progress in school.  Encourage him/her to do his/her best and to ask for help when needed.
     e.  Arrange to visit the school and become better acquainted with the teachers.
     f.  Clearly mark your child's clothing with his/her name.  This will reduce the "Lost and Found" problem.
     g.  Sign and return the Report Card envelope within three (3) days after it has been issued.
     h.  Pay your school bills promptly.  This will enable our Treasurer to meet our financial obligations.
     i.  Attend and participate in Home & School meetings, fund raising, and school programs.
     j.  Uphold the school standard in conduct, dress, and ideals.
     k.  Refrain from making destructive comments about the school or the teachers at all times.
     l.  Remember the students, teachers, and school program in family and private prayer.


5.0  Student Policies and Standards
5.1  Conduct and Discipline

     A)  Students will be taught and expected to practice rules of courtesy and good sportsmanship in their relationships with each other, teachers, and with visitors who come to the school.

     B)  At the Seventh-day Adventist Christian School we emphasize honesty, courtesy, reverence, obedience, and Christian morality.  It is the aim of this school to adhere to the Christian principles of this institution.  The following practices will NOT be permitted:
          I)  Undermining the standards and religious ideals of the school and church.
         II)  The use of swearing and slang language.
        III)  The possession or accessing of any obscene material.
        IV)  The possession and/or use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, guns (even toy), knives, and/or any dangerous materials are not permitted in the school or on the property.
        V)  Stealing, lying, cheating, or any forms of dishonesty.
      VI)  Tampering with the fire alarms or any electrical systems.
     VII)  Leaving the school grounds without permission.
    VIII)  Damaging, destroying, and/or defacing school property.  Payment of repairs will be billed to the student and his/her parents.
      IX)  Willful disrespect and disobedience to staff members.
       X)  Entering locked facilities or gaining entrance with unauthorized keys.
      XI)  Conspiracy to perform or participate in any act that may injure, degrade, or disgrace another person.
     C)  Misconduct as outlined above may result in either suspension or dismissal.

5.2  Personal Appearance
     Simplicity, appropriateness, modesty, and healthfulness describe acceptable standards of dress at a Christian School.  Where necessary, specific counsel will be given to individuals as needs arise.  The following may be used as guidelines:
     i.  Clothing and hair should be clean, neat, and modest.
    ii.  Dresses and shorts are to be of modest length.
   iii.  Functional jewelry, such as a watch, is acceptable but not rings, earrings, necklaces, etc..
   iv.  Excessive cosmetics and nail polish are not permitted.

6.0  Admission
     Seventh-day Adventist Christian School welcomes the application of any student desiring quality Christian education.

6.1  Requirements
     Parents/guardians must accompany the student at the time of registration.
A.  It is recommended that in harmony with the instructions from the Spirit of Prophecy (ref. Fundamentals of Christian Education by E.G. White, p. 21)
supported by the findings of medical science and by leading educators (ref. Better Late Than Early by Raymond & Dorothy Moore), children should not be sent to school at too early an age.
B.  Students entering grade one should be six years of age by December 31 of the school year in which they are applying.  A copy of their birth certificate is required for verification of age.
     1.  If the child is entering from home rather than a qualified Kindergarten program a readiness test will be administered to determine readiness for school.
C.  Currently enrolled students planning to attend the following year are to apply for re-admission before May 31 of the current school year.  A registration day will be announced and parents can fill out the registration form, meet with the Principal and the Treasurer.
D.   Parents of a new student will meet with the principal to discuss possible admission to this school.  The following will be required of the new student: a copy of the child's birth certificate, fill out the registration packet, and then meet with the Treasurer to discuss the financial commitments.
E.  Students entering without a formal transcript will be required to take a placement test to determine proper grade placement.
F.  No student's registration or acceptance to this school is final until approved by the school board.

6.2  Probationary Period
     Each child, that has been granted admission to the school program, will be placed on a thirty (30) day probationary period.

7.0 
Withdrawal
     When a student is withdrawn during the school year, the parent/guardian must come to the school office and fill out a withdrawal form.  At this time the student's account must be paid to the withdrawal date.  If a refund is due it will be issued.

8.0  Finances
     Seventh-day Adventist Christian School, being a private school, requires that parents/guardians contribute to the cost of operating the school.  Parents/Guardians are responsible for the registration fee and tuition charges for each attending student.  The remainder of the expense of operating the school is met by the members of the two Seventh-day Adventist Churches through contributions to the local church expense and from the yearly fruit sales, pie sales, and other fund raising events.  We strongly urge parents/guardians to participate in any fund raising events throughout the year.

8.1  Registration Fees
     The registration fees are as follows:
     Kindergarten:     $125.00 per child
      Grades 1 - 8:     $250.00 per child
      Grade 9:           $275.00 per child
      Grade 10:         $300.00 per child
     Registration fee is to be paid at registration time, unless other arrangements with the Treasurer/School Board are made.  Every child will pay registration fees. If registration fee is paid before JUNE 15 and your account is no more than 60 days overdue it will be reduced by $50.00.

8.2  Tuition Rates
     The following tuition is for one student in:
     Kindergarten:    $130.00 per month / $1300.00 per year
     Grades 1 - 8:    $200.00 per month / $2000.00 per year
     Grade 9:          $310.00 per month / $3100.00 per year
     Grade 10:        $360.00 per month / $3600.00 per year
NOTE:  Tuition for the second (2nd) child from the same family will be half of a full tuition per month. Remember that the oldest child is the first (1st) child. All subsequent children from the same family will be free. PLUS a $100.00 per year per family transportation fee.

8.3 Student Account Payments
     A monthly statement will be sent to the parents/guardians for each attending student.  Accounts are to be paid on the first (1st) of every month beginning with September 1st.  Ten (10) post-dated cheques for the tuition is required no later than the first week of school.  It is the parent's responsibility to see that all payments are properly identified, naming the student(s) for whom payment is made, so that proper and prompt credit may be given.  All monies received will be applied to your outstanding balance.  If you need assistance in paying your child(ren)'s tuition, please ask for an Application for Assistance Form from the Principal or Treasurer at the time of registration.

8.4  Student Account Arrears
     Schedule for dealing with delinquent accounts:
     a)  1st of month - payment is due
     b)  30th of month - account becomes delinquent
     c)  60 days + overdue - in absence of a written agreement for unpaid balances, parents/guardians will be requested to meet with the Treasurer and School Board Chairman.  If after meeting with the Treasurer and School Board Chairman the account is not paid the parents/guardians will appear before the School Board.
     d)  Student accounts are to be cleared by the end of the current school fiscal year in order for the student to register for the next school year.

8.5  Charitable Donations
     The Seventh-day Christian School is recognized by the Canadian Government as a Non-profit Charitable Institution.  Therefore, an official tax receipt will be given for donations to the school (donations are tax deductible).  This does not include your child(ren)'s tuition.

9.0  Insurance
     Basic 24-hour accident insurance is provided for each student that is currently enrolled in the Seventh-day Adventist Christian School.  All accidents must be reported immediately to the teacher or principal.  The cost of this insurance is included in the registration fee.

10.0  Books & Supplies
     Textbooks are issued to the students at the beginning of the school year.  These textbooks are to be returned at the end of the school year.  If they are not returned or come back in a damaged and unusable state, the replacement cost will be charged to the student's account.  The same policy will apply to lost or damaged library materials.  A supply list will be provided to the parent at registration.

11.0  Attendance Regulations
     Students are bound by Saskatchewan's Provincial Law to maintain regular attendance and punctuality.  It is very important that children learn to be punctual and to meet their appointments.  This is a quality that will be appreciated by those who they come in contact with for the rest of their lives.  It is hoped that the student, with the parents' cooperation, will want to develop a commitment to regular attendance habits.
     The school staff seeks the cooperation of the parents in the attendance policy since school attendance is a joint responsibility of the home and the school.

11.1  Parent/Guardian's Notes
     If your child is late or absent please send a note of explanation on their return to school.  The note must contain the date and reason for the lateness or absence along with a parental signature.  An excused absence or lateness will be granted if a note is received and the reason for the absence is listed under Acceptable Excuses.  If no note is sent then your child may not be marked as an excused absence or tardy.
     All missed work and any test must be made up.  A note will be required if your child will not be participating Physical Education and/or Recess.  The note must include the reason and be signed by the parent/guardian.

11.2  Acceptable Excuses for Absence and/or Tardiness
     Acceptable excuses for an excused absence:
     1)  Verified illness of a student (a doctor's note may be required if illness is over five (5) school days.
     2)  Bereavement
     3)  Medical, Dental, or Optometrical appointments {a reasonable attempt should be made to make medical, dental, optometrical appointments after school hours.  if these appointments are made during school hours. the teacher should be given a one (1) day advance notice.}

11.3  Unexcused Absences
     1)  Unexcused absences may mean a student will forfeit grades on assignments, tests, quizzes, etc. that are missed.  A student missing seven (7) days or more in any one quarter could forfeit his/her grades for that quarter unless it is evident to the teacher that the concepts are known and the work has been satisfactorily completed.  If these criteria are not met then he/she will limit his/her chances of passing his/her grade.
     2)  Arrangements are to be made in writing to the teacher seven (7) school days before a planned absence occurs for any reason other than those listed in sections 11.2.

11.4  Leaving School Property
     A student must have written permission from his/her parent/guardian, and obtain permission from the teacher on each occasion before leaving the school grounds during school time.  Any unauthorized leave will be considered as truancy and may result in immediate disciplinary actions.

11.5  Medication - Regular
     If your child is on a regular medication, please ensure that you fill out the Medication Administration Form found in the registration packet or get the form from the principal when your child is prescribed this medication.  It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to notify the student's teacher about any changes in the medication administration.

11.6  Medication - Temporary Prescription
     When it is necessary to send prescription medication to school for a student, certain guidelines must be followed:
     A)  The medication must be delivered to the teacher in the original container (with the pharmacy label attached) when the student first enters the school.
     B)  With the medication a note from the parent/guardian stating that the medication is to be taken.  In this note the parent/guardian must state the times and method for administering the medication must be fully explained.
     C)  Medication received will be locked in the office or refrigerated as required to prevent accidents, loss, or theft.
     D)  Only the teacher will administer the medication, unless other arrangements are made.
     E)  No student will be allowed to take any medication without these procedures having been followed.

11.7  "Over the Counter Medication"
     The staff at the school will not offer to any student any "over the counter medication".

12.0  Arrival and Dismissal of Students
     There is usually very little need for students to arrive more than fifteen (15) minutes before classes begin at 8:30 AM.  When school is dismissed for the day the students who walk to school are expected to leave the school premises immediately.  Those students awaiting rides are to be picked up by 3:15 PM on Monday through Thursday and 12:45 PM on Friday.  Parents/Guardians are to make arrangements for these students if they are unable to pick them up by the appointed time.

13.0  Visitors
     Visitors are welcome to visit the school when it is in session providing arrangements have been made with the principal and/or teacher one (1) or more day(s) in advance.  Students are not to bring friends or relatives to school without permission from the principal and/or teacher one (1) or more day(s) in advance.

14.0  Telephone
     Students are discouraged from making phone calls during school hours except on urgent matters, and with the permission of the principal and/or teacher.  Incoming calls after 8:30 AM and before 3:00 PM will be answered by our answering service.  Please leave a message and your call will be returned as soon as possible.  If you'd like to make an appointment with your child's teacher or the principal please call before 8:30 AM or after 3:00 PM.

15.0  Field Trips and/or Other School Functions
     Educational Field Trips, Swimming Lessons, and other school functions are compulsory as they are an integral part of the school curriculum throughout the year.  Your child receives a grade based on participation and knowledge for these events in the subject that it pertains to.  The students will be well supervised and care will be taken for their safety.  Parents/guardians will be given sufficient notification of each field trip, and a written permission slip will be obtained for each event.  Remind your child that ALL school rules apply during these field trips for all participants.

16.0  Grievance Policy
16.1  Purpose

     The purpose of this grievance policy is to promote unity and harmony while reconciling differences.  It outlines a process by which problems may be resolved and that a sound relationship can be maintained and strengthened.  The emphasis of this policy is placed on open communication between the individuals involved.  The process emphasizes the solution of problems at the level closes to their origin, based on the premise that each party is interested in reaching fair and just solutions to grievances.

16.2  Procedures
Step One:  A parent or any member of the school constituency with a grievance shall first present it to the teacher within ten (10) working days of the incident.  If a teacher has a grievance these same procedures apply in reverse.
Step Two:  If the grievant is not satisfied with the results of the informal conference, he/she may arrange a meeting with the principal and the teacher to present the grievance in writing to the teacher within five (5) working days following the informal conference referred to in Step One.  The written statement should be a clear, concise statement of the grievance including the date(s) of the incident(s), the circumstances involved, any agreements or understandings resulting from the informal conference, and the specific remedy sought.  The teacher shall reply in writing to this formal complaint within five (5) working days indicating a proposal or plan of action based on the information regarding the grievance.
Step Three:  If the proposal or plan of action contained in the written response from the teacher in Step Two is not satisfactory, the grievant may appeal in writing within five (5) working days following receipt of the response, that the matter be referred to the school board.  This request is to be honored and is to be considered at the next regular or special meeting of the school board following the request.  The decision voted by the board is to be communicated in writing to the grievant within five (5) working days following the board meeting.

16.3  Provisions
1)  The grievant shall be given the opportunity to be present at the board meeting at which an appeal has been lodged.  He/she may be asked to leave the meeting while the board reaches a decision regarding the grievance.
2)  Notifications specified in Steps One (1) through Three (3) of section 16.2  will either be hand delivered to the grievant or sent by registered mail.  
3)  Extension of time limits or omission of one or more steps may be made by mutual consent.  Such agreements should be put in writing, signed by both parties, and a copy filed at the next higher level.
4)  No reprisals shall be taken against any participants in the grievance procedure by reason of such participation.
5)  Agreements, consents, or understandings must be in writing and signed by all participants.

17.0  Other Regulations
     Regulations adopted and announced by the Seventh-day Adventist Christian school board are as binding as those printed in this handbook.

18.0  Changes
     Any changes to this handbook will be printed with the adoption and action date.  Parents/guardians, school staff, and students will be given written notification of any changes.
